Now that I am back in my home country, I wanted to apply for an SSS Loan just so I have a record that I did. Many people told me that if I don’t use it, someone else may. And since I was gathering requirements for my new job, I decided to apply for a loan while I was at their office.

Here’s how I applied for my SSS Salary Loan at our nearest SSS Center.

1. Check and make sure you’re eligible to make a loan

To be eligible for the loan, the following are the requirements according to the SSS website.

  1. All currently employed, currently contributing self-employed or voluntary member.
    • For a one-month loan, the member-borrower must have thirty six (36) posted monthly contributions, six (6) of which should be within the last twelve (12) months prior to the month of filing of application.
    • For a two-month loan, the member-borrower must have seventy two (72) posted monthly contributions, six (6) of which should be within the last twelve (12) months prior to the month of filing of application.
  2. The member-borrower whose employer must be updated in the payment of contributions.
  3. The member-borrower has not been granted final benefit, i.e., total permanent disability, retirement and death
  4. The member-borrower must be under sixty-five (65) years of age at the time of application
  5. The member-borrower has not been disqualified due to fraud committed against the SSS.

In my case, I have been working since 2010. Although I worked in Thailand for five years, I have maintained my monthly contributions through my ever supportive aunt.

The good thing is you can check your contributions without waiting in a long queue to be entertained by a staff because they have a machine to do that now. With the assistance of the office staff, I was able to confirm my eligibility for a loan. What’s even cool is that there is an option to print them if you want.

SSS Machine, just place your UMID ID and activate it. Then, you can access different options on your account.

I was able to view and print all my SSS contributions from my first remittance to the most recent one.

2. Fill out a loan application form

Ask for this application form at the front desk where you can also get your queue number and fill out all the details required.

3. Wait for your turn

This is the toughest part of the process, waiting time. In my experience, my queue number was 184 but they were only entertaining queue number 100 when we came inside. So my aunt and I decided to grab lunch first.

My advice is to bring a book to read or something to do while waiting so your time will not be wasted. Luckily for me, my aunt accompanied me that day and she loves to talk. Ha! There was no dull moment with her. =)

Although they say they don’t have lunch break but around lunch time, there were only one or two staffs.

3. Loan Approval and Instructions

Upon checking, the staff will confirm if you are eligible for the loan you’re applying for or not. For me, my loan was confirmed and approved with 16,000 PHP allowable loan on my first time.

Then, the staff explained when and how long I shall pay for it. I was also told that the money will come in as a cheque through our post office in three weeks. Yay!

UPDATE as of August 29, 2019:

The cheque finally arrived. But that was after three visits to the post office.

I was able to talk to colleagues or other people who also applied for a loan where they have the same complaint- long wait of the cheque. I only wish that the SSS personnel would inform us honestly of when to expect the money. Instead of telling us three weeks, why not say it’ll be available in a month or so? Para hindi naman tayo umasa and people can save money from going back and forth to the post office. =)
